The industry boasts more than 2.5 billion players worldwide and according to Forbes, seven contenders in mobile gaming make over $100 million dollars in earnings each month. Mobile gaming is estimated to be worth over a hundred billion dollars by the end of 2021 and growth in this industry is set to increase by over ten percent from 2021 to 2025 period. It is estimated that most of this earnings will be generated in the Chinese market. The top spot for highest earnings, year-to-date goes to Tencent’s PUBG Mobile. The mobile game took the top spot as of August 2021 with approximately 4.7 percent growth from August 2020 to August 2021. It also boasts earnings of $270 million dollars, in player spending worldwide. The game has accrued roughly $200 million US dollars for each month of 2021, thus far. Honor of Kings is another mobile gaming application produced by China’s Tencent. The mobile game proudly boasts a three percent year-to-year growth rate as of August 2020 to August 2021. Honor of Kings generated a cool $256 million dollars in earnings through players revenue for the month of August 2021, alone, with roughly 95 percent of these earnings were generated from the Chinese market. The remaining five percent of revenue was generated by Taiwan and Thailand, respectively. This makes Tencent the leading mobile gaming publisher in the world.
Genshin Impact
miYoHo’s Genshin Impact takes the third position in the global top-performing mobile gaming industry, with earnings derived from player spending over the same period. The company generated $150 million dollars in gross revenue, globally, over a period of seven days, in August 2021. From inception to date, the company has generated nearly $1.9 billion dollars in global revenue and is becoming a serious contender for the number one position, with player revenue and interest increasing daily.
Fate/Grand Order
From Sony’s Aniplex, Fate/Grand Order is set to take the fourth position in global earnings generated from players. The Japanese mobile game has generated $133 million US dollars for the month of August 2021 and has shown a fourteen percent increase in revenue over the last twelve months. It needs to be mentioned though, that the company’s global revenue from its inception has accrued to $5.5 billion dollars. This makes it one of the top ten grossing mobile games of all time.
Pokemon Go
From Niantic, Pokemon Go has established itself as a real contender in generating global revenue and due to its earnings sits at our number five spot. The mobile game has netted over $5 billion US dollars year-to-date in global revenue. The first half of 2021 has seen the company generate $641.6 million US dollars in global revenue and is up to thirty-four percent from 2020. The game still enjoys popularity amongst players, with an estimated 830 000 active daily users in January 2021.
The global mobile gaming industry has seen tremendous growth over the past twelve months with no signs of slowing down. The industry is set to exceed $121 billion dollars in earnings by the end of 2022. While the order of the top five mobile games may change from month to month, these five contenders seem to hold the top positions consistently.
